Questions from 7mononoke

For you, how do you tell if an anime is high quality in terms of visuals?

There are a few points I always consider in order to tag a particular anime as high quality. For most of the part, the smart use of colors play a major role and that requires knowledge of art. I have not watched many animes, but I can surely say that the ones who used colors in a much better way, provided a different feel in terms of visuals. I call it the concept of “animating the colors”, which describes how objects and characters undergo color transitions. If you think deeply then you will find out that colors are not merely used for filling a particular character or scene, but it provides an altogether different feel, mood and environment of the anime.

It is so much easier to distinguish two animes only based upon the color palette and styles used. Colors are used as a way of expressing different plot points, events, seasons, intensity of situation, psychology of anime characters at a particular point and so much. The more darker the anime story is, the more dark color palettes will be seen. It just depends upon how the mood is set in the entire story.

One more important thing that I would like to add here is the intelligent use of camera direction, positioning and placement. It really requires a great skill to be able to portray different characters and scenes from a good viewpoint and angle. Combine this with outstanding 3D animation and the scenes become lively and fantastic. So a high quality anime in terms of visuals means better use of colors and camera movement along with a nice 3D touch.

Do you like to listen to anime OSTs sometimes?

Yes I do like to listen to anime OST’s. However I don’t actually listen to each and every anime’s OST, but there are definitely some animes whose OST’s are worth listening. From Demon Slayer I really like “Tanjiro no Uta” (Actually it is like a song but can be called OST I think). From Haikyuu there are numerous OST like, from which I mostly like these three called “Above”, “Frustration” and “Daytime Moon”. From Space Brothers I like this one which I think is the main OST of the anime because you will happen to hear it every now and then in the anime.

What’s an anime that you consider a masterpiece?

Right now I am already currently watching a masterpiece anime called “Attack on Titan” because this one is really epic, legendary and unbelievable. It just keeps surprising me episode by episode and its unpredictable story and incredible animation makes me crazy! If there exists a concept of an “ideal” anime, then Attack on Titan will be the best example of that.

Also I would like to mention that Death Note is also pretty good and considered as a masterpiece by most of the people. I too had a belief that Death Note is the “ultimate” anime until I found out about Attack on Titan and saw it with my own two eyes. This anime is truly amazing in each and every aspect. While analyzing this anime, I feel like a teacher checking the answer sheet of a student who has written exceptionally close to perfect paper!

What’s an anime that’s so horrible you think it shouldn’t exist?

Okay, so I have not gotten to that point yet because I am still new to anime and my pacing of watching animes is quite slow. However I am thinking why should I actually care that much about a single anime? The presence of a ‘hopeless’ anime (hopeless in my opinion) doesn’t bother me in any way. If I dislike an anime completely, I just ignore it or discontinue it and move forward. I understand that animes are slightly subjective as well. Also I do agree that some animes are really quite bad in everyone’s eyes. It’s just that I have not hated an anime to such a point, because I have not seen much of them in the first place!

What are your favorite colors for anime eyes?

I think green eyes are pretty good. There is no specific reason behind why I like green eyes because I never thought about it that much. I just compared different colored anime eyes and found this one the most appealing. That’s it.

Can you help me think of some cover/banner image ideas for Anime Rants?

Just put an anime scenery for the banner, I think that will work best!

Did you know I have a Patreon account now? I’ll link it at the end of the post.

No I didn’t knew about that. But I don’t use Patreon.

About how old were you when you got into anime?

Actually I will give multiple answers to this. First of all, if I talk about animes like Doraemon, Ninja Hattori, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Shinchan, Atashinchi etc, then I first watched these shows when I was maybe 11 years old. These shows are the ones I have never watched from start till the end because obviously I watched them on TV. However if I talk about first anime that I watched fully, then that would be when I was 18 years old. Since then, I had been watching animes continuously on AnimeVibe. However I think I really got “into” animes only since the past 5 months.

In your opinion, can an anime still be “good” and have poor, cheap art/animation?

I can see “can” in your question, so I assume we are talking about possibilities here. Well it depends upon the story and a lot of other factors. Even though there is so much emphasis on animation quality, I do feel that a great story is also necessary. An anime with a good story is “good” but will become “best” when combined with better art and animation, it is as simple as that.

Let us understand it in a reverse way, like for example take a ‘good’ anime and imagine that suddenly now it has poor animation. So in that case, the overall quality is bound to deteriorate. That means this theory doesn’t work in a reverse way. The loss in quality must be balanced out by improving the other factors of the anime so that the impact remains the same. So animes can still be ‘good’ with poor animation provided they have immensely powerful story and other factors.

Do you have trouble getting motivated to write blog posts and if so why do you think that is?

It used to happen frequently when I had just begun blogging but right now I don’t actually push myself to write blog posts. It is mostly difficult because you just have to keep using your head and actually think about different ideas, especially regarding animes and other stuffs to in order to write posts. I don’t just post continuously and my posting is not consistent as well, because I just post whenever I feel like posting. Right now I don’t need to feel motivated in order to write posts because blogging has become quite comfortable for me, thanks to all the fellow bloggers on this platform. I have learned a lot from you all, and intend to continue my blogging journey further.

Have you ever taken a MBTI 16 Personality test and if so what type were you?

Bonus : Personality Database is the website where you can actually look for MBTI of some famous people, including anime characters. The answers are based upon the voting system, so I think it is quite accurate as well. Check it out.
